The Georgia Senate just voted to approve SB 63, which dramatically expands mandatory cash bail, a system that undermines public safety and punishes people for being poor. SB 63 removes judicial discretion by imposing cash bail for 30 new offenses, many of them misdemeanors not involving violence. It also places an additional burden on charities who help bail people out of jail by treating them as for-profit bondsmen. In fact, the bill would not allow organizations, charities, individuals, or groups to bail out more than three people per year!
SB 63 ignores the last two decades of history, which have shown that these “tough on crime” policies are ineffective, expensive, and regressive.
